Survey of Online Tech Journals

Phi Delta Kappan: www.pdkintl.org/kappan/kappan.htm

Phi Delta Kappan has been known as the journal for educators since it began publication in 1915. Phi Delta Kappan covers all areas of education and is published monthly during the school year from September to June.

I found this online journal to be very easy to browse through. A few highlights of this online publication include: A table of contents with a breakdown of each article and a brief abstract. A link to "Articles Online" where you can click on full text articles. A "Backtalk" feature which allows you to e-mail the editor and a gallup poll section which links you to Phi Delta Kappan’s gallup poll page.

The types of articles vary per issue. A May 2003 issue is largely focused on the No Child Left Behind Act. Articles in this issue examine pros and cons, costs and benefits of the Acts. An April 2003 issue is more or less completely devoted to phonics while the March 2003 issue focuses on racism in schools. All articles in this online journal come with an abstract and full text articles can be purchased for $3.00 each.

New Horizons for Learning: www.newhorizons.org

New Horizons is an online journal which began publication in 1980. It is a non-profit international organization whose mission statement claims that the publication is a "catalyst for change in education that publishes the most recent research and information on learning and provides strategies for teaching all ages and all abilities."

This online journal is easy to browse and includes links to articles that discuss issues from how students learn to what effects the environment has on changes in the brain. Teachers might find a link titled Transforming Education helpful. It focuses on creative new ideas for new kinds of educational systems. Teaching and Learning Strategies is another helpful link that describes the latest methods in educational research used to help students learn. A page called Student Voices allows students to express their opinions about what they think works in their classrooms.

Computers in Libraries: www.infotoday.com/climage/default.shtml

Computers in Libraries is an online magazine that is published monthly and focuses on news and issues in the field of library and informational technology. This online magazine contains a full table of contents which is broken down by the following headings: Conferences, Magazines, Books, Newsletters/Events, Information Services, Knowledge Management, Advertising and the Online Store. This magazine includes regular columns from respected journalists such as "The View from the Top" by Michael Schuyle; "Online Treasures" by Janet Balas; "Systems Librarian" by Marshall Breeding; "Digital Librarian" by Peter Jasco and the "Technicians Tech Page."

Each monthly publication has a topic or theme. For example, the July/August issue focuses on the annual CIL Directory of Suppliers and Services. This issue advertises over 250 categories of products.
